Five days isn't a lot of time for a country as packed with experiences as Sri Lanka. But with the right route, you can fit in misty mountain hikes, a world-class wildlife safari, golden beaches, and authentic village culture — without feeling rushed or spending half your trip in a van.
This 5-day Sri Lanka itinerary is built around the destinations we know best: Ella, Yala National Park, and Arugam Bay, with an optional village cultural experience near Buttala. It's designed for travellers arriving from Kandy or the hill country and heading to the east or south coast, and it hits the highlights that most two-week itineraries spread thin over twice the time.
Every stop in this itinerary maps to a real experience we operate, so you're not just reading a list of place names — you're seeing a trip that's been tested with hundreds of travellers.

This itinerary works best from May to September when both Yala and Arugam Bay are in season. For seasonal details, check our best time to visit Sri Lanka guide.
Day 1: Arrive in Ella — Mountain Magic
Getting there: If you're coming from Kandy, take the famous Kandy-to-Ella train — widely considered one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. The ride takes about 6 hours through tea plantations, misty valleys, and viaducts. Book a second-class reserved seat for the best balance of views and comfort.
Afternoon: Nine Arches Bridge Ella's most iconic landmark. This colonial-era railway bridge spans a deep valley surrounded by jungle. Time your visit for when a train crosses — the schedule varies, so ask your hotel. The walk from Ella town takes about 20 minutes through tea bushes and village paths.
Late afternoon: Little Adam's Peak A moderate 45-minute hike that rewards you with panoramic views of Ella Gap, the surrounding mountains, and terraced tea plantations stretching to the horizon. The trail starts from the road to the 98 Acres Resort area. No guide needed — the path is well-marked.
Evening: Ella town has an excellent restaurant scene for a small town. The main street is walkable, with cuisines ranging from traditional Sri Lankan rice and curry to wood-fired pizza and smoothie bowls.
For guided options, check our Ella Adventures.
Day 2: Ella — Go Deeper
Early morning: Ella Rock Sunrise Hike Set your alarm for 4:30 AM. The Ella Rock hike is more challenging than Little Adam's Peak — about 2 hours to the summit — but the sunrise views from the top are unforgettable. The trail winds through tea estates and forest. A local guide is recommended as the path can be confusing in the pre-dawn darkness.
Mid-morning: Tea Factory Visit After the hike, visit one of the working tea factories near Ella. You'll see the full process from fresh leaf to finished tea, and taste varieties you won't find in supermarkets back home. Most factories charge a small entry fee and include a tasting.
Afternoon: Village Experience (Optional but Recommended) This is where your itinerary diverges from every other 5-day Sri Lanka plan on the internet. Near Buttala, about an hour from Ella, we offer an authentic village experience that puts you inside daily rural Sri Lankan life.
What it involves:
- Cooking a traditional meal over a wood fire with a local family
- Walking through paddy fields and spice gardens
- Learning about traditional farming techniques
- Making fresh buffalo curd with village dairy farmers
- Sharing a meal you cooked with the family
This isn't a staged cultural show. It's a real village where families live and work, and our guests consistently call it the most memorable part of their Sri Lanka trip. No other tour operator in this region offers access to this community.

Evening: Return to Ella for your last night in the mountains. Pack your bags for an early start tomorrow.
Day 3: Yala Safari + Transfer to Arugam Bay — The Big Day
This is the day that makes this itinerary special. Instead of wasting a full day on a bus transfer to the coast, you turn the journey into a wildlife adventure.
3:30–4:00 AM: Pickup from your Ella hotel. Your driver arrives with a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle. Sleep in the car if you need to — it's a 2.5-hour drive to the park.
6:00–6:30 AM: Arrive at Yala National Park. Transfer to an open-top 4x4 safari jeep. Your guide briefs you on the morning plan.
6:30–10:00 AM: Three hours of safari in Sri Lanka's premier national park. Yala has the highest leopard density in the world, plus elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, wild buffalo, and over 200 bird species. See our detailed Yala safari guide for what to expect.
10:00–10:30 AM: Exit the park and have breakfast at a restaurant near Tissamaharama.
10:30 AM–1:00 PM: Continue the drive east to Arugam Bay. The landscape shifts from jungle to dry-zone scrub to coconut palms and lagoons. Arrive at your guesthouse in time for a late lunch.
Afternoon: Settle in, hit the beach, and adjust to the completely different pace of Arugam Bay. You've earned it.
This entire day — safari, transfer, everything — is our Yala Safari + Arugam Bay Drop-Off package. Your luggage travels in the support vehicle, and you don't need to arrange anything separately.
Day 4: Arugam Bay — Surf, Sand, and Seafood
Morning: Surfing Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka's surf capital. The main point break — called simply "Main Point" — produces rides of 200 metres or more when the swell is right. It's best for intermediate to advanced surfers.
If you're a beginner, head to Baby Point or Whiskey Point where the waves are gentler and surf lessons are available from local schools. A two-hour group lesson with board rental costs roughly LKR 5,000–8,000 ($15–25 USD).
Even if you don't surf, watching the lineup from the beach is mesmerising — especially in the golden late-afternoon light.
Afternoon: Pottuvil Lagoon Rent a kayak or join a guided boat tour through Pottuvil Lagoon. The mangrove channels are home to monitor lizards, water birds, and the occasional elephant coming down to drink. It's peaceful and completely different from the surf scene.
Evening: Seafood Dinner Arugam Bay's restaurant strip comes alive at sunset. Fresh fish, prawn curry, cuttlefish, and the east coast's famous Muslim-influenced cuisine — biryani, short eats (deep-fried snacks), and wood-fire-baked roti — are all on offer. Most restaurants are casual, outdoor, and affordable.
Explore our Arugam Bay experiences for guided options.
Day 5: Last Morning + Departure
Option A: Morning Surf Session If the waves are good, grab one more session before you leave. The early morning glass-off (before the wind picks up) is often the best surf of the day.
Option B: Kumana National Park (Half-Day) If you're a wildlife or birdwatching enthusiast, Kumana National Park is 25 km south of Arugam Bay. It's Sri Lanka's most important nesting site for migratory water birds, with flamingos, painted storks, and pelicans. Far less crowded than Yala, it offers a tranquil safari experience.
Onward travel options from Arugam Bay:
- To Colombo — 7 to 8 hours by car, or overnight bus
- To Trincomalee — 5 hours north along the east coast
- To the airport — Plan for 7 to 8 hours by car
- To Ella (if doing a loop) — 3 to 4 hours, see our Ella to Arugam Bay route guide in reverse

Why This Itinerary Works
Most 5-day Sri Lanka itineraries try to cram in Colombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, and a beach — which means you spend more time in transit than actually experiencing anything. This route keeps you in one corridor (Ella → Yala → East Coast) and lets you go deep instead of wide.
What you get:
- ✅ Two full days in the hill country (Ella) — enough to actually hike, explore, and relax
- ✅ A world-class wildlife safari without a separate day trip
- ✅ Two nights on the coast — enough to surf, eat well, and unwind
- ✅ A genuine cultural experience that most tourists never find
- ✅ Zero backtracking — every day moves you forward on the route
