The main surf season typically runs about May to October, when southwest monsoon energy delivers consistent swell to the east coast. That is when Main Point and neighbouring breaks see the most reliable action and the town feels liveliest.

November to April is generally quieter for classic east-coast swell. The bay can still be beautiful for beach time, swimming when conditions allow, and exploring lagoons — just set expectations for different wave quality.

Main Point is the headline right-hander in front of town. Nearby spots (often reached by tuk-tuk or short drive) serve different abilities and crowds — beginners should take a lesson rather than paddling straight into peak season lineups.

Respect local surf etiquette, watch reef and current conditions, and ask a local school about the day’s safe zones. East-coast sun is intense; reef booties and sun protection help on longer sessions.

Beyond the lineup, the east coast rewards slow days: Pottuvil lagoon boat rides at calm hours, short trips toward Panama and Kumana for wildlife and birding, and Magul Maha Viharaya for a quiet cultural stop.
