Nuwara Eliya sits at 1,868 metres in Sri Lanka's central highlands — the highest town tourists commonly visit. Known as "Little England" for its colonial-era architecture, cool climate, and immaculate gardens, it feels like a completely different world from the beaches and lowlands just a few hours away.
From Ella, Nuwara Eliya makes an excellent day trip or overnight stop, especially if you're combining it with a visit to Horton Plains National Park. The drive takes about 2 to 2.5 hours through some of Sri Lanka's most beautiful tea country.

Our recommendation: Hire a car for the day. The drive itself is part of the experience — the road climbs through tea plantations with viewpoints at every turn. A private vehicle lets you stop at a tea factory, a waterfall, and any viewpoint that catches your eye.
What to Do in Nuwara Eliya
Pedro Tea Estate
One of Sri Lanka's most famous tea factories, Pedro sits just outside Nuwara Eliya and offers guided tours through the entire production process — from the fresh green leaves being withered on racks to the final grading and packing. The tour ends with a tasting session where you can try different grades of Ceylon tea. The quality difference between grades is remarkable and you'll never look at supermarket tea the same way.

Gregory Lake
This artificial lake in the centre of Nuwara Eliya is surrounded by a pleasant walking path with views of the town and surrounding hills. You can hire a pedal boat or swan boat on the lake, though the main appeal is the peaceful walk along the shore. It's a good spot to stretch your legs and take photos.
Victoria Park
A well-maintained botanical garden in the heart of town. The park is home to a variety of tropical and temperate plants, and it's an excellent spot for birdwatching — Sri Lankan endemics like the yellow-eared bulbul and the Sri Lanka white-eye are regularly spotted here.

Hakgala Botanical Garden
About 10 kilometres south of Nuwara Eliya, Hakgala is Sri Lanka's second-largest botanical garden, specialising in temperate and sub-tropical plants. The rose garden is famous, and during blooming season (March to May) it's spectacular. The garden sits at the foot of Hakgala Rock, a dramatic cliff face that adds to the scenery.
Colonial Architecture Walk
Nuwara Eliya's town centre retains much of its British colonial character. The Grand Hotel (built in 1891), the Hill Club, the red-brick Post Office, and the racecourse all evoke the era when British planters retreated to the cool highlands to escape the lowland heat. Even if you don't stay in these buildings, they're worth a walk past for the architecture and atmosphere.
Seetha Amman Temple
A Hindu temple linked to the Ramayana epic, believed to be the spot where Sita was held captive. The temple itself is small but colourful and sits beside a stream in a scenic valley. It's about 5 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya on the road toward Ella — you can stop here on the drive between the two towns.
Day Trip to Horton Plains from Nuwara Eliya
Horton Plains National Park is one of Sri Lanka's most dramatic landscapes — a high-altitude plateau at 2,100 metres covered in cloud forest, montane grassland, and sheer cliff faces. The main attraction is World's End, a cliff that drops 880 metres straight down with views stretching to the southern coast on clear days.
Getting there: Horton Plains is about 30 kilometres from Nuwara Eliya (1 hour drive). The park opens at 6:00 AM and it's essential to arrive early — clouds typically roll in by 10:00 AM, obscuring the World's End viewpoint.
The hike: A 9-kilometre circular trail takes you past World's End and the smaller Mini World's End. Allow 3 to 4 hours for the loop. The terrain is flat to gently undulating — moderate fitness is sufficient.

Important: No plastic bags are allowed inside Horton Plains. All food must be transferred to cloth or paper bags at the entrance.
Combining Nuwara Eliya with Your Ella Trip
Option 1: Day trip from Ella — Drive to Nuwara Eliya in the morning, visit Pedro Tea Estate, explore the town, return to Ella in the afternoon. Total: 6–8 hours.
Option 2: Horton Plains + Nuwara Eliya day trip — Leave Ella at 4:30 AM, drive to Horton Plains for the 6:00 AM opening, complete the World's End hike by 10:00 AM, drive to Nuwara Eliya for lunch and a tea factory visit, return to Ella by late afternoon. Total: 10–12 hours (long but rewarding).
Option 3: Overnight stop — Drive from Ella to Nuwara Eliya in the afternoon, explore the town, stay overnight, do Horton Plains at dawn the next morning, then continue onward (to Kandy, the airport, or back to Ella). This is the most relaxed option.
What to Expect: Climate and Packing
Nuwara Eliya is significantly colder than the rest of Sri Lanka. Daytime temperatures range from 15 to 20°C, and nights can drop to 8 to 12°C. If you're visiting from Ella (which is already cool), Nuwara Eliya will feel noticeably colder.
Bring: A fleece or warm hoodie, a rain jacket (showers are common year-round), and closed-toe shoes for walking.
