Trains
Sri Lanka Railways is the romantic way into the hill country. The Colombo–Kandy–Nanu Oya–Ella corridor is the classic scenic run. Book reserved seats early in peak season; unreserved carriages are cheaper but crowded.
Trains can run late. Build buffer time if you have a same-day safari or flight. Keep valuables close in busy carriages.
Buses
Intercity buses are inexpensive and frequent on major roads. They are also fast, crowded and not ideal with bulky luggage. Fine for backpackers on a budget; less ideal the morning of a dawn safari.
Tuk-tuks
Perfect for short town hops (Ella, Tissa, Arugam Bay). Agree a fare before you start or use a metered/app option where available. For temple visits, ask the driver to wait if you want an easy return.
Private drivers
