Currency
The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). US dollars and euros are widely recognised for larger tourism quotes, but day-to-day spending (cafés, tuk-tuks, small shops) is smoother in rupees.
ATMs & cards
ATMs are common in cities and tourist towns; they can be scarce in smaller villages. Notify your bank before travel. Cards work at many hotels and larger restaurants; keep cash for small vendors and some ticket windows.
Avoid isolated ATMs at night. Cover the keypad and put cash away before walking off.
Exchange tips
Exchange at reputable banks or licensed dealers. Compare rates rather than changing everything at the airport if you arrive late and tired — a small amount for the first day is enough.
